How to Design a Custom Air Force Coin
At VeperPins, we usually start with whatever the customer already has, like a squadron patch, aircraft photo, unit name, or text. From there, we work out the front, back, and size.
Front Design
If you already have a squadron patch, it can become the main focus on the front. We can keep the original artwork and colors, or shape the coin around the patch outline so the finished piece is easy to recognize at a glance.
Patches, lettering, and simple emblems usually work well in 2D. Fighter jets and other designs that need more depth are better suited for 3D relief.
Key areas like the fuselage, wings, and engines can be raised at different levels, while very small details may be simplified so they still look clean in metal.
Back Design
The back is usually a good place for the unit name, base, call sign, unit motto, mission name, date, or personal details.
For a coin tied to a specific aircraft, you can also add the aircraft tail number. Retirement, promotion, or recognition designs can include a name, rank, and years of service.
If there is a lot of text, we usually rework the layout instead of shrinking everything down. For example, the unit name can go around the edge, the mission name in the center, and the date or tail number near the bottom.
Shape and Size
Round is the most common shape, but if the squadron patch has a strong shield, wing, or other recognizable outline, the coin can follow that shape instead.
