Army Challenge Coin Design Ideas
Most Army challenge coin projects don’t start with finished coin artwork. You might only have a unit patch, a DUI, a photo of an old coin, and a few details you want included, such as a unit name or deployment date.
That’s more than enough to get started.
The first step is figuring out what should be the main focus of the coin, then deciding what belongs around the edge or on the reverse. For Army coins, one strong unit identifier usually works better than trying to fit five or six different elements on the same side.
Unit Insignia and Crests
For a coin representing a specific unit, we usually start with the DUI, shoulder sleeve insignia, unit crest, battalion or brigade emblem, and choose one as the main design element.
Artwork from a patch doesn’t always need to be copied exactly. Fine embroidery lines, tiny gaps, and small details that look good on fabric may not translate well at coin size. When we redraw the artwork, we keep the parts that make the insignia recognizable and adjust the metal lines and color areas for production.
If your design includes a unit crest, unit number, and another insignia, the main crest can take the center while the unit number or secondary mark moves to the outer ring or reverse.
You can send us an existing patch, badge, old challenge coin, or reference photo. You don’t need to create finished coin artwork before contacting us.
Mottos, Names, and Dates
Text is one of the easiest ways to overcrowd a challenge coin.
A unit name or short motto usually works well around the outer edge. Details that belong specifically to the event or project—such as deployment dates, an operation name, location, anniversary year, or commander’s name—often work better on the reverse.
If a motto is too long, we usually wouldn’t shrink the lettering just to make everything fit. Moving some of the text to the other side or removing less important wording usually gives you a cleaner, easier-to-read coin.
Deployment Coin
A deployment coin might have the unit crest on the front, with the operation name, deployment location, and dates on the back.
Commander Coin
A commander coin might keep the unit insignia on the front and use the reverse for the commander’s name, rank, or a recognition message.
Army Symbols and Equipment
Helicopters, tanks, military vehicles, weapons, base landmarks, and MOS-related symbols can all work well on an Army challenge coin when they actually connect to the unit or mission.
The artwork itself helps determine whether 2D or 3D is the better choice.
A helicopter, weapon, or MOS symbol with a clean silhouette may look great in a standard 2D design. If the artwork needs to show the shape of an aircraft, armor on a vehicle, depth in a building, terrain, or a person’s features, 3D relief can make those details easier to see.
That doesn’t mean every detailed coin needs to be fully 3D.
For example, the helicopter itself can be sculpted in 3D while the unit name, motto, and dates stay in clean 2D metal. This keeps the equipment detailed without making the entire coin feel too busy.

For engineers, logistics, aviation, and units with colorful crests, soft enamel with double-sided coloring can help keep each design element sharp and easy to recognize.
How long does production take? Will they arrive in time for our deployment or promotion ceremony?
We take deadlines seriously. Once you approve the digital design proof, standard production usually takes about 20 days. When the schedule allows, rush production generally takes 13–16 days.
