Reordering Custom Enamel Pins: How to Match Your First Batch

Reordering custom enamel pins with logo designs you’ve used before usually comes down to one question: will the new batch match the first?

When we have the original order details, matching the size, colors, plating, and design is usually straightforward. Even without the original artwork, an old pin or clear photos can often give us enough to work from. Here’s what you’ll need for a reorder and what can change between production runs.

What Information Do You Need to Reorder Custom Pins?

If you’re reordering pins you’ve made before, the easiest place to start is with your old order number or artwork. If you’re using the same manufacturer, they can often pull up the original size, colors, plating, and other specs from the previous order.

If you don’t have the order number, send the original artwork if you still have it, such as an AI, PDF, PSD, PNG, or JPG file.

Only have the physical pin? That works too. Send clear photos of the front and back along with the pin size. Photos taken in natural light can also help with color matching. If needed, you can send an old pin as a physical reference.

Any specs you remember are also helpful, including:

• Pin size
• Soft or hard enamel
• Pantone colors
• Metal plating
• Backing type
• Packaging
• Previous order quantity
• New reorder quantity

You don’t need to have everything before asking for a quote. An old order number, artwork file, photo, or sample is usually enough to get started.

Can the Original Pin Mold Be Reused?

Yes. At VeperPins, we keep your original pin mold for two years at no charge. If the mold is still in usable condition and the new order uses the same basic structure, it can usually be reused, so you won’t need to pay another mold fee.

However, some changes can affect the mold itself and may require a new one.

When Is a New Mold Needed?

A new mold may be required if:

The pin thickness changes
For example, if the original pin was 1.5 mm thick and you want the reorder to be 2 mm thick, a new mold will usually be needed.

The pin shape changes
If you change the outer shape, proportions, or add or remove design elements that affect the metal structure, the mold may also need to be remade.

What Changes Usually Don’t Require a New Mold?

If the size, thickness, and basic structure stay the same, you can usually keep using the original mold when making changes such as:

• Switching from soft enamel to hard enamel
• Changing the plating, such as polished gold to polished silver or black nickel
• Changing the enamel colors or Pantone colors

So if you only want to update the colors, plating, or enamel style when reordering, a new mold usually isn’t necessary. The main things to check are whether the thickness, outer shape, or metal structure has changed.

Will a Reorder Be Exactly the Same as the First Batch?

There May Be Slight Color Differences

Even when the same Pantone colors and plating are used, small color differences can happen between production runs. We’ll match the original colors and finish as closely as possible, but we can’t guarantee that a new batch will be 100% identical to the first one.

The Unit Price May Change

If the specifications stay the same, we’ll usually use your previous order as a reference for pricing. However, material, labor, and other production costs can change over time, so the unit price may be different. We’ll always confirm the current price with you before starting a reorder.

You Don’t Have to Reorder the Same Quantity

Your reorder quantity doesn’t have to match your original order. For example, if you ordered 500 pins the first time, you can reorder 100 this time or increase it to 1,000. Pricing will be based on the quantity of the new order.
